Catographic Center of the Hungarian Defence Forces

Company profile

Activity goals of the Cartographic Center of the Hungarian Defence Forces (CC HDF, MH KARTÜ) as specified in its Deed of Foundation is:

"To produce different topographic and thematic maps and other cartographic documents for the Hungarian Defence Forces (HDF), to operate a computer centre, to carry out RD activities in the field of cartography and GIS. In addition, by utilising its free capacity, to provide services in cartography, GIS and reprography on a contractual basis."

CC HDF is the legal successor of the Tóth Ágoston Mapping Institute (MH TÁTI) in the above activities.

In the late 80's, MH TÁTI began to deal with the cartographic application of data-processing. It was done earlier on research level, later in practical implementation.

This task was continued by CC HDF, the results of which are represented in the projects listed under.

Projects

DTA 200
This dataset has been created on the basis of the 1:200 000 scale digital topographic map for the territory of Hungary containing its road and railway network, settlements and their names, drainage and drainage feature names, national and county boundaries, spot heights, road distances and major geographic names. Digitising the vegetation data is currently in progress using manual data capturing methods. The dataset is accessible in .DXF or .DWG file formats in Gauss-Krüger or EOV projection systems; total size is 7.2 Mbytes. The dataset was accomplished by the experts of the institute on IBM PC-s with Alphagraphic software between 1987-90.
DDM 50 and DDM 10
These two datasets provide terrain elevation data above sea level for the whole territory of Hungary on 10 x 10 and on 50 x 50 metres grid, respectively. The data source was the contour layer of the 1:50 000 scale military topographic map. The datasets are available in EOV projection system raster data structures divided into 1:100 000 scale EOTR sheets, however, filtering with lower grid densities are also feasible. The total size of the file is 2.6 Gbytes. DDM 10, the most detailed elevation model of the country at present has been completed by the experts of the Institute with the contribution of the State Telecommunication Authority and Geomatik Ltd. on IBM PC-s and DEC VAXstation workstations between 1991-92.
DTA 50
Digital processing the content of the 1:50 000 military topographic map, the largest and most significant action of the Institute till now has begun in 1993. Data capturing is performed first by raster, then by vector processing the reproduction originals of the map sheets. Resulting from the vectorisation and data processing, a "smart" digital dataset, divided into layers and categories by feature-coded map features will be established. This work is carried out in co-operation with AGM Ltd. on PC-s and Intergraph workstations. Transformation into raster data files has been completed, vectorisation activities are in progress now. As the result of the first stage of these efforts, preparation of the GIS skeleton map is expected to be completed in the second half of 1995. The project is supported by the National Committee for Technological Development (OMFB). Also in the initial phase of this work the standard draft "General Requirements of the Military Digital Topographic Maps" has been submitted and now is ready to be published under ref. nr.: MSZ-K 1066.
BP 15
Computer processing the 1:30 000 scale version based on the 1:15 000 scale military city map of Budapest has started in 1994. The map will contain full street network, street names, bloc outlines (with distinguished representation of housing, industrial, non-built up, forest, and other vegetation areas), cultural, administrative and social facilities, city transportation features, city and district boundaries and certain information on street numbering. This work is executed by the experts of the Cartographic Centre of the Hungarian Defence Forces on VAXstation workstations and expected to be completed at the end of 1995.
