*World Games – Italian orienteering athlete Debertolis falls ill: now in
intensive care in Chengdu.*
The athlete from Veneto’s GPS signal stopped transmitting during the race.
He was quickly located and taken to hospital.
*The orienteering community is anxiously awaiting news about Mattia
Debertolis, the Italian athlete who competed in the men’s middle-distance
race this morning but was unable to finish.* His teammate Francesco Mariani
completed the course, earning a silver medal, while Debertolis, from
Veneto, collapsed and lost consciousness. The World Games medical team
responded immediately, transporting him to hospital. Following initial
tests, he was transferred directly to intensive care. Emergency
communication lines between China and Italy were activated with the
assistance of the Italian Embassy and the Ministry of Sport.
*According to initial reports, Debertolis — a 29-year-old civil engineer
from Trentino who works in Stockholm — was competing as normal when his GPS
device, carried by all athletes, suddenly stopped transmitting, indicating
that he had stopped moving.* This prompted an immediate rescue operation.
He was quickly located and rushed to hospital, where he is now recovering
under constant medical supervision.
