Tuesday, April 9, 2019 - Michael Buehler - "Why the Map Trade Still Matters
in the Age of the Internet"
Michael Buehler founded Boston Rare Maps in 2002. As a dealer he focuses on
rare, important and unusual 18th- and 19th-century American maps and
historical prints, and recently he has also developed an interest in
"persuasive maps". Michael has published articles and curated exhibitions on
18th- and 19th-century American mapmaking and is a regular public speaker.
He is a governing board member of the American Historical Print Collectors
Society, and was recently elected to membership in the American Antiquarian
Society and the Grolier Club.
It is no secret the internet has transformed the field of antiquarian map
collecting, dealing and scholarship. In some ways the gains are profound:
with a few keystrokes anyone can access a wealth of primary and secondary
sources; buyers have hitherto undreamed-of access to material; and increased
transparency is stabilizing prices. These gains come with costs, however,
among them the changing relationship between map dealers and their
clientele. In aggregate, this relationship has become more focused on "the
deal" than on the development of a mutually-beneficial long-term
partnership.
And yet at its best the map trade offers a set of services that represent a
unique "value proposition." These include for example the discovery and
restoration of maps, warrantying the maps brought to market, and the
identification of new fields for collecting and research. This value
proposition benefits collectors, institutions, scholars and dealers. And it
is unlikely-at least any time soon-to be replicated by the internet.
