ISHMap-List is operated by the International Society for the History of the Map and is offered free and open for all. According to the decision of the 2014 AGM the list is NOT moderated. However, we offer the list to real persons who are interested in the schoalrly discussion of our subject. For this reason the list Administrator need pieces of information about the subscriber to be able to decide if he/she is a real person or not (usually the name and professional affiliaton).
Messages from those list members who would not provide sufficient information will be moderated (but they can use to the list). Messages from unidentified members will be read first by the Moderator of the list (the Society's Webmaster), and once he accepts the posting the message is forwarded to all subscribers. The  Moderator will be anxious to forward all relevant postings to the subscribers within a day. If you would like to send your message directly and instantly please,  complete or update your user profile :-)
Technical hints:
The maximum size of each message is 2 Mb. Please, note that for security reasons no attachements are allowed. Formatting of your message, although preserved in most cases, can not be guaranteed.
For more detailed instructions about the ISHMap-List please, read carefully the Terms and Conditions of the ISHMap-List  (please find it below). For more detailed technical information and detailed explanation how to use Mailman software please, visit this page.

    Terms and Conditions

    The ISHMap-List and service is intended to be as free, open and inclusive as possible, but some checks are necessary to ensure that all messages and notices are genuine and appropriate. This page explains the List’s policies to which contributors are asked to agree.

    All, not just Society members, are welcome to subscribe and post information relating to the history of the map, research, and bibliographical information, regardless of nationality, discipline, profession, or academic standing.

    The only requirements are that the information added relates to the study of early maps, is correct, and is inoffensive.

    The messages should be in English - but may include a link to another relevant source in another language.

    We would like to build an international scholarly community. Although subscription is open to anyone and anonymous and giving your name is optional, we ask all contributors to identify themselves properly when sending a message.

    Subject Matter

    All messages should concern some aspect of the history of the map. This normally means any maps that are no longer current; in the Western tradition, this includes even most maps made in the 20th century. The history of maps, or the history of cartography, encompasses all aspects of their creation, distribution.

    The List does not exclude any particular topic or methodological or theoretical approach, but celebrates all aspects of maps as cultural, scientific, or artistic artifacts.

    Please make you’re the titles of your post relevant to the topic you are posting about. Do not use titles that are too vague to inform people before they click. To the best of your ability, please do try to use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. We understand if English is not your first language, of course.

    Map history is necessarily interdisciplinary. The List is not limited by discipline. The participation of art historians, historians of science, geographers, literary scholars, historians of the book, social and cultural historians, philosophers, sociologists, and so on, is actively encouraged.

    Inappropriate Content

    Inappropriate content (whether text, images, or links) includes but is not limited to:

    • content unrelated to the history of maps;
    • content already in copyright (such as published works);
    • content deemed to be offensive by common standards of decency;
    • content that is untruthful;
    • personal messages to individual subscribers;
    • commercial advertising.

    The Moderator(s)

    The above standards are maintained by Moderators appointed by the ISHMap Council.

    They review all submissions and have the responsibility to

    • reject materials that are clearly inappropriate;
    • consult with Contributors should borderline material be posted;
    • decline all contributions from individuals who repeatedly violate the rules, or abuse the Directory;

    Contributors can appeal the decisions of the Moderators. The Council will then decide.

    Should you wish to appeal, contact the Chair of ISHMap directly. The Council’s decision will be considered as final.

    If you come across a post that violates these rules or is otherwise inappropriate, please send a private message to the List-owner or one of the Moderators with the title of the post, who posted it and the date it was posted.

    While the owner of ISHMap-List make and the Society make every reasonable attempt to keep the list functioning and of a generally 'friendly' and safe environment, there are no guarantees. Because this is a free service, open to use by all registered users, it is literally impossible for the Moderators to control all aspects of the discussion. Accordingly, by participating in the discussion list, you agree to participate at your own risk.

    The List-owner, the Moderators, the Society and the provider of the service shall not be liable for any damages, losses or expenses which result to you due to your participation or the participation of other subscribers to this discussion list. ISHMap and the service provider make no warranty, express or implied that access to this list will be available at any particular time, that operation of the list will be uninterrupted or free of error. Participation in the discussion and subscription to the list is offered „as is” basis without warranties of any kind.

    The opinions expressed in the messages are personal views of the subscribers. The opinions expressed by postings to this list are not necessarily those of ISHMap, its Trustees, Moderators or Members.
