The MacLean Collection Map Library in Chicago has loaned several rare
Japanese maps for display at the University of Denver Libraries, located in
the Anderson Academic Commons. These maps were recently displayed at the Art
Institute of Chicago.
The Director and Curator of Asian Art for the MacLean Collection, Richard A.
Pegg, PhD, will visit the university for a special presentation, jointly
hosted by DU Libraries and the Rocky Mountain Map Society. Dr. Pegg's recent
books include Cartographic Traditions in East Asian Maps (2015). His
presentation will discuss a number of unique characteristics found in
Japanese maps in the MacLean Collection map library. These include
multidirectional views, map designs on ceramic plates, and the integration
of Western practices like the compass rose, bird's eye view and latitude as
part of Japan's approach to cartography in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The event is free, but RSVP is required.
