Scale

To calculate the approximate scale of a photograph:
1. Find 2 points in the photograph which can be identified on the map and simply divide the distance derived from the map by the distance on the photograph to get the scale (assumes fairly flat terrain).

Scale = AB / A'B'

2. A cruder method is to divide the flying altitude by the focal length. Be aware of the fact that the altitude is very often given in feet.
