Dear members of International Society for the History of the Map (ISHM) and

This thrice-yearly journal with articles on maps, the history of
cartography, and exploration is the only journal of its kind in the
Americas.   Below is information on the Winter 2016 issue recently published

"THE PORTOLAN": JOURNAL OF THE WASHINGTON MAP SOCIETY
ISSUE 97  (Winter 2016)

Issue 97 (Winter 2016), consisting of 84 pages, was published in November
2016  and is in distribution to all paid subscribers and members in good
standing of the Washington Map Society.  Copies are available for purchase.

JOHN RENNIE SHORT explores the modern national atlas.  PETRA SVATEK
discusses academic cartography at the University of Vienna from 1848-1900.
HAROLD MEINHEIT explores an 1838 map of Vietnam by Bishop Jean-Louis Taberd
being used in national disputes today over the Paracel Islands.  GUNNAR
THOMPSON proposes new information about the North Atlantic, and especially
Newfoundland.  JAMES GOODE concludes a four-part series highlighting
treasures in the Albert H. Small Collection of Washingtoniana.  BERT JOHNSON
provides an early look at the coming July 2017 International Conference on
the History of Cartography.   And there is more.

JAMES GOODE, the author of several books on the history of Washington, D.C.,
has been the curator of the Albert H. Small Washingtoniana Collection since
1992.

BERT JOHNSON is a past president of WMS.  He has attended the last nine
ICHC's and looks forward to Belo Horizonte.

JOEL KOVARSKY, proprietor of The Prime Meridian: Antique Maps & Books, is
the author of the 2014 book "The True Geography of Our Country: Jefferson's
Cartographic Vision."

DR. PETRA SVATEK is a member of the Department of History, University of
Vienna, Austria.  

HAROLD E. MEINHEIT is a former American diplomat who spent much of his
career in Asia, including Vietnam.  He is currently secretary of the
Washington Map Society.

THOMAS SANDER is editor of "The Portolan" and a Past President of the
Washington Map Society and the Society for the History of Discoveries.

FREDRIC SHAUGER is President Emeritus of the New York Map Society. This is
his fourth book review in "The Portolan".

DR. JOHN RENNIE SHORT is Professor in the School of Public Policy at
University of Maryland Baltimore County, USA. He has published on a wide
variety of subjects and is a frequent contributor to academic journals

DR. GUNNAR THOMPSON is Chief Archaeologist at the New World Discovery
Institute in Seattle.
