Drisela Kraja (ELTE Eötvös Loránd University, Institute of Cartography and Geoinformatics): Cultural heritage and geodiversity in one place: the Rozafa Castle in Albania
Located in the western part of Shkodra, Rozafa Castle stands as one of the largest and most historically and architecturally important castles in Albania. This castle is situated in a geodiversity hotspot in the Shkodra region, known for its diverse geological formations, morphology, soil types, and fossil resources. When referring to "geodiversity hotspot", it signifies that a quantitative geodiversity assessment for the Shkodra Region was calculated, analyzing five key variables: geological, geomorphological, soil composition, paleontological and mineral resources of the area. This presentation highlights the importance of the integration of geodiversity with modern and digital technologies. Using drone and GPS technology, a 3D model of Rozafa Castle was created, offering insights into how natural and cultural elements intersect. The findings aim to enhance tourism while deepening understanding of the region's geodiversity and its role in historical development.

Prof. Károly Németh (Chair of the IUGS Sub-commission on (Geo)Sites of the Geoheritage Commission): Geoheritage valorisation and geodiversity estimates within the IUGS Geological Heritage Site and UNESCO Global Geopark programs
Geoheritage, which has been studied almost since the 18th century, has been rediscovered by the scientific community during the last 25 years. Geoheritage is a generic but descriptive term applied to sites or areas of geologic features with significant scientific, educational, cultural, or aesthetic value. Geoheritage aims to highlight the diversity of our planet to illustrate the importance of the biotic and abiotic factors, which document the historical evolution of the Earth. Furthermore, geoheritage focuses on the important geological elements, such as rocks, minerals, and fossils that interpret the effects of past and present actions, which have shaped landforms and other geomorphological structures. While currently reasonable well-established methodology is widely accepted in the scientific community, there are still challenges what exactly should be treated as a core of geoheritage. Is geoheritage something absolute attribute of Earth or it is something that link human society to the abiotic nature? Geodiversity is even more unsettled term. Many experts treat it as a diversity or number density of abiotic features and should be treated similarly like biodiversity. There are groups that even put direct correlation between geodiversity and biodiversity. Other experts looking geodiversity from the practical perspective and demonstrate diversity itself in geological context not the most useful term and it doesn't function in the same way as biodiversity, and better to treat the abiotic nature diversity with some sort of relative abundance and corresponding value that then can help to locate areas where potential geosites can be identified. Geosites are locations that are along some value systems superior or the best representations of geological and geomorphological features through various scales. The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) established a new designation in the early 2020s called IUGS Geological Heritage Sites. These are geosites that are the world's best demonstrations of geologic features and processes. They are the sites of fabulous discoveries of the Earth and its history. They are sites that served to develop the science of geology. The selection of the First 100 in 2022 then the Second 100 in 2024 followed a well-designed system that put the scientific values of these location in front. IUGS also acting as an active advisor for UNESCO Global Geopark selections to monitor the geoheritage and geodiversity of the nominated regions to guarantee that the geological context of the regions fulfils the globally significant criteria.
In this presentation we explore the new advances of geoheritage valorisation, inventory building and geosite designation. We overview the latest theoretical arguments for defining geodiversity and its connection to geoheritage. Geodiversity estimations evolved dramatically in recent years applying advanced spatial statistic techniques that provided a wealth of new information ready to be tested for their usefulness. Finally, we outline the IUGS Geological Heritage Site programs and IUGS roles as a main scientific advisory body for UNESCO Global Geopark proposal evaluations.
