ISSUE 105 (FALL 2019)

Thrice-yearly journal with articles on maps, thehistory of cartography,and exploration is the only journal of its kind in the Americas. Issue 105 (Fall 2019), consisting of 82 pages, was published in August 2019 and is in distribution to all paid subscribers and print-issue members in good standing of the Washington Map Society.  Copies are available for purchase.

 HAL MEINHEITrelates the story of British surveyor James McCarthy who mapped even the remotest areas of Siam in the late 1800’s. JACOB SINGER,awarded honorable mention in the 2018 Ristow Prize competition, describes themapping of northwest America in the mid-eighteenth century. RICK LAPRAIRIEshares the discovery of the first map to name Toronto. JOHN HESSLERdescribesthe recent acquisition by the Library of Congress of a rare eighteenth century carving of a Theravada Buddhist cosmography. There is more, including three book reviews.

CYRUS ALA’Ihassince 1984 studied the history of cartography and collected old maps ofPersia.  The writer of many articles, most on Islamic mapping, he is authorof two books:“General Maps of Persia, 1477-1925” and “Special Maps of Persia 1477-1925.”

JOHN HESSLER,FRGS,is Curator, Kislak Collection of the History & Archaeology of the Early Americas at the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.

BERT JOHNSON is past Vice President ofthe Washington Map Society

RICK LAPRAIRIEis a geographer who specialized in natural resource and land use planning policy. An aficionado of historicalmaps, he has studied the early cartography of the Great Lakes region for more than 25 years.

HAL MEINHEITisa former American diplomat who spent much of his career in Asia, including four years in Thailand.  He is currently secretary of the Washington MapSociety.

DICK PFLEDERERisa member of the Editorial Advisory Board of ‘The Portolan’. He is the author of “Finding their Way at Sea”, the “Commentary” accompanyingthe recent facsimile edition of the “Andrea Benincasa Atlas of 1476”, and several reference books about portolan charts.

THOMAS SANDER is Editor of “The Portolan”.

JACOB SINGER,agraduate of Wesleyan University, was cited for Honorable Mention in the2018 Competition for the Walter W. Ristow Prize for an Academic Paperin the History of Cartography.

LEAH M. THOMASis Assistant Professor ofEnglish at Virginia State University in Petersburg. She earned her PhD in the interdisciplinary program Media, Art, & Text at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she studied the intersection between cartography and literature of the eighteenth century.

Membership/Subscription Cost: Subscription cost is the same as membership, and may be commenced at any time. To U.S. addresses, the cost is US $45.00 per year. To Canadian addresses the rate is US $50.00 per year.  For other foreign addressees, the annualcost is US$ 65.00. Multiple year memberships/ subscriptions are available; the annual cost is reduced if a multiple year membership is chosen – see web site. Membership rates will increase on January 1, 2020.  All non-US address copies of the journal are sent airmail; the US Postal Service nolonger offers a surface option. DIGITAL-ONLY individual memberships areavailable – US $20 the first year for newmembers; one year is US $30, the annual cost is reduced if a multiple year membership is chosen – see web site.
