"How Maps Reveal (and Conceal) Our History"

Dr. Susan Schulten

5:30 PM at Denver Public Library, 5th Floor, Gates Room

Free and open to the Public

Over five hundred years, America has been defined through maps. Whether
handmaidens of diplomacy, tools of statecraft, instruments of social reform,
or advertisements, these sources offer unique windows onto the past. Join
Susan Schulten as she discusses some of the maps and stories featured in her
new book, A History of America in 100 Maps. Gathered largely from the
British Library's incomparable collection, these artifacts range from battle
plans designed by established figures to unpublished manuscripts drawn by
ordinary Americans.

Susan Schulten is author of Mapping the Nation: History and Cartography in
Nineteenth-Century America (2012) and The Geographical Imagination in
America, 1880-1950 (2001). She is also editor of Constructing the American
Past, a two-volume history of America with Oxford University Press. Her work
has been funded by the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the
Humanities, and the Henry Huntington Library. Her current project- A History
of America in 100 Maps -has just been published by the University of Chicago
Press. She earned her BA in history from UC Berkeley, and her PhD in History
from the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Schulten has taught at the
University of Denver since 1996, and from 2010 to 2017 served as chair of
the history department.
