September 20, 2016 - Lee Whiteley:

"Trails to Interstate: Transportation Systems

Along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains"

Lee Whiteley

5:30 PM at Denver Public Library, 5th Floor, Gates Room

Maps from many sources were essential in locating and documenting the paths
of transportation systems, from horse trails to Interstate.

General Land Office land plats from the early 1860s, the result of the
earliest survey of the public lands, accurately traced the routes of wagon
roads. Highway "strip maps" guided the pioneer automobile traveler along
colorfully named "auto trails.

Lee Whiteley is a fourth-generation Coloradan now living in Centennial. He
graduated from Englewood High School and the University of Denver. He took a
very early retirement from the City and County of Denver, where he was a
computer programmer-analyst. He and wife Jane are authors of five books on
early transportation systems of the West. They are associate producers of
the PBS documentary Paving the Way, the National Park-to-Park Highway.

This program is free and open to the community.
