"William Henry Jackson, Artist and Mapmaker in His Later Years"
Camille Bradford
5:30 PM at Denver Public Library, Gates Room, Fifth Floor - Open to the
Public
William Henry Jackson (1843-1942), a Civil War veteran, was renowned as a
photographer in the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871, which led to the
creation of Yellowstone National Park. He had a long and fruitful career as
a photographer of the American West. He participated in a number of events
throughout the USA to preserve the legacy of the trails. From 1929 until his
death, Jackson was Research Secretary of the Oregon Trail Memorial
Association (OTMA), creating maps of pioneer trail routes and paintings of
historic western scenes. His iconic photographs have been reproduced in
numerous books and magazines over the years.
A number of Jackson's paintings appeared in several books written by OTMA's
president, Howard R. Driggs. OTMA later became the American Pioneer Trails
Association (APTA). After Jackson's death, APTA donated a collection of his
paintings to the Scotts Bluff National Monument in Nebraska, with funds for
the creation of the William Henry Jackson Wing.
Camille Bradford is past president of the Colorado chapter of the Oregon-
California Trail Association (OCTA) and an active member of the Rocky
Mountain Map Society. She is also the stepdaughter of Howard R. Driggs.
This presentation will include photographs, correspondence, maps and movie
clips from the Howard R. Driggs Collection at Southern Utah University.
