I have been on academia.edu since its inception. It is indeed a very useful platform for scholarly work. The ability to tag one's work for multi-disciplinary interests makes it possible to reach large devoted audiences including those signed up for notifications from the history of cartography. I second Tony's call. Just be sure to tag your work under "history of cartography" when you post it. You will also need to sign up to receive notifications on the addition of new work under history of cartography. It's a user friendly site that is very easy to use. Think of it as Facebook for scholars :)

Recently, academia started something new: active online discussions on articles. The head of academia got in touch with me about promoting papers for discussion forums. I have participated in a couple of these article-based discussion forums. They present a new and stimulating approach to the discussion of scholarly ideas. I highly recommend it.

I can't recommend Twitter. Although I use it, or used to use it, it's not conducive to the scholarly discussion of ideas. Twitter postings are limited in a size equivalent to sound bites. As such the medium is useful for news. It takes a lot of time to keep up so I stopped checking my Twitter account some years ago. Academia works much better for us scholars who don't have the time to check Twitter and Facebook frequently.

My two cents...

Best,
Karen Pinto
