An understanding of early maps is best achieved through an analysis that
seeks to integrate a scientific approach to map history with the idea
that maps are also subject to socio-economic and political influences
prevailing at the time. An analytical framework that uses such an
integrated approach is applied here to William Petty's atlas of Ireland,
published in 1685 under the title /Hiberniae Delineatio/, in an effort
to deepen our understanding of this landmark in the mapping of Ireland.
