Subject: PhD Studentship in Human-computer Interaction (fully funded for four
years)
Dear all,
Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship in Human-computer Interaction
(HCI). The position is offered by the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier
University
(http://www.napier.ac.uk/about-us/our-location/our-campuses/merchiston).
The studentship will cover tuition fees to home/EU applicants, and will
provide a living allowance (stipend) of Ł15,462.70 per annum. Overseas
applicants are eligible to apply, but will be liable to pay the difference
between home/EU and overseas fees.
Applicants are expected to provide support in both novel and on-going research
in the area of Human-computer Interaction (HCI), particularly in emerging
topics such as wearable computing and smart environments. This includes the
development of prototype systems, the conduction of user studies, and the
performance of data analysis. As such, applicants are expected to demonstrate
both critical thinking and programming skills. For informal inquiries, please
contact Dr Augusto Esteves at a.esteves at napier.ac.uk
(http://www.mysecondplace.org).
The PhD candidate will register as a full-time research student, and will be
invited to carry out teaching at the University (no more than one day per
week). This is an exciting opportunity to study for a PhD degree at the same
time as gaining a formal qualification which will serve as the basis for a
career in Industry or Higher Education.
Essential Selection Criteria
EC1. BSc (Hons) degree in a discipline relevant to HCI.
EC2. Practical experience in the use, development, and application of
methodologies and equipment typically associated HCI.
EC3. Strong programming skills in one programming language (e.g., Python,
Java, JavaScript).
Desirable Criteria
DC1. Post Graduate degree in a discipline relevant to HCI.
DC2. Published author in any major ACM/SIGCHI conferences.
DC3. Experience of teaching, assessment, and curriculum development in Higher
Education.
DC4. Strong programming skills in more than one programming language.
DC5. Knowledge of statistical analysis (e.g., R, SPSS).
To apply, please send a copy of the following documentation to Dr Augusto
Esteves (a.esteves at napier.ac.uk) by 31 July 2016:
1. A formal application (RD1 form).
Please highlight how you meet the Essential and Desirable criteria (if any) in
the Personal Statement section of the document. Furthermore, you are not
required to complete the Research Proposal section. The RD1 form can be
accessed at:
http://www.napier.ac.uk/~/media/documents/research-documents/application-form-rd1.ashx?la=en
2. A complete CV (including research publications).
Please note that only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.
The PhD Studentship is expected to start in October 2016.
Best,
Augusto Esteves
