This thrice-yearly journal with articles on maps, the history of
cartography, and exploration is the only journal of its kind in the
Americas. Below is information on the Spring 2018 issue recently published

"THE PORTOLAN": JOURNAL OF THE WASHINGTON MAP SOCIETY
ISSUE 101 (SPRING 2018)

Issue 101 (Spring 2018), consisting of 84 pages, was published in February
2018 and is in distribution to all paid subscribers and members in good
standing of the Washington Map Society. Copies are available for purchase.
LAUREN KILLINGSWORTH traces the spread of disease in Oxford; this article
won the Washington Map Society's 2017 Ristow Prize. RYAN MOORE examines the
mapping of a German colony in China. LORNA HAINESWORTH explains the
surveying done by Meriwether Lewis at Cumberland Gap. ANDREI NACU looks at
early mapping of central Romania. GEORGE LOBZHANIDZE shows haw the capital
of the country of Georgia was depicted on early maps. Six books are
reviewed. And there is more.

AUTHORS OF ARTICLES AND REVIEWS
JOCELYN COULON is a journalist and researcher on peacekeeping and
international affairs. He is a former senior policy advisor to the Canadian
Minister of Foreign affairs. His collection of African maps spans from 1575
up to the beginning of the Twentieth Century.
EDWARD H. DAHL is formerly Early Cartography Specialist, National Archives
of Canada (now Library and Archives Canada).
LORNA HAINESWORTH is an ambassador for the Surveyors Historical Society, the
Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, the Maryland National Road
Association, the Lewis and Clark Trust, Inc., the Department of the
Geographer and other such organizations. She is an independent scholar
studying American history predominantly during the period 1740-1850.
BERT JOHNSON is a past president of WMS. His interest in the maps of Greece
and the Hellenic world dates back several decades.
LAUREN BOUCHARD KILLINGSWORTH, the winner of the 2017 DR. WALTER RISTOW
PRIZE FOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN THE HISTORY OF CARTOGRAPHY, is currently a
senior at Stanford University, where she studies History and Biology. She is
interested in the role of medical cartography is shaping popular perceptions
of disease and public health, and in the debate between contagionists and
anti-contagionists (or "localists") during the cholera outbreaks of the
mid-nineteenth century.
GEORGE LOBZHANIDZE, PhD, has worked in the field of the cartography of the
country of Georgia for 15 years and has produced several articles and one
monograph, which is the only work that completely covers Georgian
cartography in 16th-8th centuries.
HAROLD MEINHEIT is a former American diplomat with wide experience in Asia.
A regular contributor to The Portolan, his most recent article, "The
Bishop's Map: Vietnamese and Western Cartography Converge," appeared in the
Winter 2016 issue. He currently serves as Secretary of the Washington Map
Society.
RYAN MOORE is a Cartographic Specialist, Geography and Map Division, Library
of Congress, Washington D.C. His earlier articles in this journal: "Mapping
the Ruhr Uprising" (issue 90 - Fall 2014) and "Mapping Over There: The
American Army and Mapping in World War I" (issue 93 (Fall 2015).[i]
ANDREI NACU is a PhD student, "Lucian Blaga" University of Sibiu and
Research Assistant, Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities, Romanian
Academy, Sibiu.
KATHERINE PARKER, is a Research Officer at Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique
Maps Inc. and Administrative Editor, Hakluyt Society.
ED REDMOND, President of the Washington Map Society, is with the Geography
and Map Division, Library of Congress.
THOMAS SANDER is Editor of "The Portolan"
JOHN RENNIE SHORT is Professor in the School of Public Policy at University
of Maryland Baltimore County. He is a widely published author and publishes
in a wide range of academic journals. His article "The Modern National
Atlas" appeared in this journal's issue 97 (Winter 2016).
LEAH M. THOMAS is Assistant Professor of English at Virginia State
University in Petersburg. She earned her PhD in the interdisciplinary
program Media, Art, & Text at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she
studied the intersection between cartography and literature of the
eighteenth century.
