1.1 The aim of the training
Among the Hungarian higher educational institutes, only our University's Department of Cartography
grants diploma in cartography. The aim of the training is to educate highly qualified experts with
scientific world outlook, who
- know the modern methods of map-making;
- have learnt the mathematical and cartographic construction principia, surveying procedures,
representation and reproduction technology of maps with various purposes;
- can apply developed technology (instruments, computers, ...) and methods to produce own maps;
- have the knowledge of adjoining sciences (geodesy, geology, geophysics, geography, meteorology,
astronomy, statistics, history, linguistics, ...);
- can analyse and process data from national and international, old and new maps and other
cartographic publications (globe, celestial globe, relief map, ...);
- can prepare maps for various sections of the national economy;
- go in for cartography;
- are qualified to teach cartographic knowledge.
The training of cartographic experts supply:
- cartographic and surveying institutions;
- institutions processing scientific data on/from maps (national defence, statistics, geology, geography,
meteorology, environmental protection, hydrology, forestry);
- directing and designing sections of national economy (government offices, research institutes,
designing offices);
- institutes for map archives (libraries, museums, archives, ...).
Important professional fields - such as tourism, mass media, sport, protection of monuments, ... - give
work to cartographers.
