I have the very sad duty of reporting the death last weekend, following a heart attack, of Ralph Hyde, the former keeper of prints, maps and drawings at Guildhall Library, London.

Ralph will be best known to map historians as the author of the standard work, Printed Maps of Victorian London
(1975), and many other books and articles on historic maps of London, often published under the auspices of Harry Margary and the London Topographical Society , including
Ward Maps of the City of London (1999). He was also probably the world’s leading expert on panoramas and related phenomena such as peepshows – his

stages on preparation.
