1994,recognizes academic achievement in the history of cartography and honors
the late Dr. Walter W. Ristow, former chief of the Geography and Map Division
of the Library of
Congress.

THE
AWARD

<b> $1000 cash award, a one-year membership in the Washington
Map Society, and publication of the paper in The Portolan</b>, the journal of
the Washington Map Society. Honorable Mention may be awarded to an
additional paper or papers at the judges’
discretion.

ENTRY
CRITERIA
</font></p>

<p><font size="3" face="times new roman,times,serif">
The competition seeks research papers in the field of the
history of cartography, completed in fulfillment of coursework requirements.
All papers must be in English, documented in a style selected by the author,
and not in excess of <b>7500 words</b>. Inclusion of clear graphics supporting the
paper is encouraged. Papers entered for the Prize may have been previously
presented at academic symposia or entered in other competitions. They must not,
however, have been published, selected for publication, or in consideration
for publication at the time of
entry.

including the entrant’s name, address, telephone number, e-mail address,

<p><font size="3" face="times new roman,times,serif">1) Importance of research (e.g., originality, sources used),

quality (e.g., clarity, organization, command of cartographic
terms).
