Tárgy: Washington Map Society: Walter Ristow Prize, 2025
Dear Colleague,
On behalf of the Walter W. Ristow Prize Committee and the Board of Directors of the Washington Map Society (WMS), I wanted to reach out and ask for your help.
As we launch the new 2024-2025 academic year, the WMS is broadening its engagement within academia and cartographic organizations to spread the word with your students and colleagues. The last few years have taught us just how global the WMS’ reach is, but we are eager to get more rising scholars and emerging specialists involved in the history and geography of maps. Specifically, we seek to encourage undergraduate and graduate students to submit academic papers in these areas.
The first step has been to offer a cash prize of $1500 and a three-year WMS membership to the author of the best Academic Paper on the history of cartography received by the Committee. The cash prize and membership are modest incentives, but we hope it will encourage deeper engagement by a larger group of scholars in this field. But, perhaps most important, for rising scholars the Ristow Prize comes with publication in The Portolan, the journal of the WMS. As we are committed to helping launch graduate and undergraduate students into the study of maps, the Ristow Prize is a unique means to getting student work published.
I have attached a flyer about the Ristow Prize if you would be willing to print it and display it for your students. If you know of anyone teaching a history, geography or cartography course that requires a term paper, please mention the Ristow Prize as a possibility for those students.
Another important step, and one which we would like to inform a wider circle of scholars about, is the existence of a special category of membership in WMS for students. The annual digital membership is only $10, and we hope it will provide a means to get more students engaged with the study of maps and their history and significance. The attached flyer mentions this membership category; further information on membership is available on the WMS website (https://WashMapSociety.org<https://washmapsociety.org/>).
There are many other ways for you, your colleagues, and your students to get involved with the WMS. We appreciate everyone who engages with our social media and helps spread the word about WMS. And we are always eager to get more article submissions, from both emerging and established scholars, to sustain The Portolan as a quality journal.
Sincerely,
Deepak Bhattasali
