Subject: Ordnance Survey PhD studentships withe the EPSRC CDT in Geospatial
Systems Newcastle
Ordnance Survey and the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Geospatial
Systems invite high-quality applications for up to two 4-year PhD studentships
at Newcastle University on:
(i) Multi-scale multi-domain geospatial data modelling: this topic will
develop the core concepts that allow different spatial domains of interest to
be seamlessly linked to allow cross-scale and cross domain analytics and
simulation. The PhD will develop methods that link domains from internal BIM
building scale models, through to the city scale and across domains of
interest (energy, transport, water, environmental, societal, digital etc.).
(ii) Modelling electric vehicle impacts: this topic will investigate the
spatial interdependency between electric vehicles and energy demand/supply. It
will develop analysis and modelling to understand how projected growth in
electric vehicles will change electricity demand and consider the supply
networks that will be required to roll out charging points. The PhD will have
an opportunity to work with the Future Mobility research group and National
Centre for Energy Systems Integration (CESI) who partner the CDT.
Ordnance Survey will supply data, use cases and research support. Students
will have an opportunity to undertake a placement within Ordnance Survey of
between 1 and 3 months during the PhD and have an opportunity to attend the
Ordnance Survey PhD workshops.
In year 1 students will receive joint training in Geospatial Data Science
covering spatial data capture, management, analysis, statistics, modelling and
visualisation, along with the new computing technology and methods that are
transforming the use of geospatial data. In years 2 to 4 students will
undertake their PhD research project and a range of CDT-wide cohort-based
activities and Industry-informed training on Responsible Research and
Innovation (RRI).
Each PhD covers full fees, maintenance stipend and a generous Research
Training Support Grant (RTSG) for travel, conference attendance and
international partner university/industry placements.
