MC/06/11 Agenda for meeting 2-2006 and Minutes of meeting 1-2006

The minutes of the meeting in Vantaa, Finland January 2006 were approved. These had been published on the MC web page.

MC/06/12 Map Commission Projects

1 PrintTech Project
JL had circulated a test sheet to all Federations seeking details of printing. No replies at present.

TG raised the problem of four-colour printing with black being used as part of the colour mix.
TG suggested that black should be avoided in the CMYK specification for non-black colours. It was also noted that the CMYK colour table in ISOM2000 should be treated as an example. Optimal CMYK values must be found for each printer, and will depend on both the type of paper and ink used.

2 Map Generalisation
EP gave a further presentation on his ideas for some practical approach to teaching the concepts of generalisation of orienteering maps. He had circulated a list of sets of symbols to incorporate features onto a map in order of importance. He also presented a paper on the symbols already available for generalisation.
It was agreed that he should continue. EP would welcome photos and OCAD files with examples.

3 Evaluations of Maps for IOF Events
Members of the Commission had produced evaluations on all the maps used for IOF events in 2005. (JWOC is still under preparations). These were on the IOF Map Commission web site. It was hoped that they would provide organisers and mappers with examples of good practice.

It was felt that some maps were not to the standard expected for IOF events .It was agreed that MC will discuss with Foot-O Commission the results of the evaluations.

The MC agreed to carry out the same exercise for the 2006 maps.
World Cup 1, EC Estonia - HT
WOC, Denmark - FHJ
EYOC, Slovenia - LZ
JWOC, Lithuania - TG
WMOC, Austria - SG
MTBO, EC, Poland - JL
MTBO WOC, Finland - JL
World Cup 3, France - EP

MC/06/13 ISSOM

1 It was noted that the Czech and Spanish Federations had translated the ISSOM into their local language. They contained local variations.

2 An updated version of ISSOM slightly restructured and with a number of minor corrections, was to be circulated for Map Commission to check by 31st August 2006. It would then be placed on the IOF Map Commission web site. A list of changes to the previous version would be circulated at the same time.

MC/06/14 Map Clinics

1 Chile February 2006. TG reported on this Clinic. There were 29 participants. His main problem had been the lack of translation facilities. He had submitted a report to IOC/ARISF. A number of photographs are displayed on the MC web site.

2 Brazil November 2006. The Map Commission would be holding a Mapping Clinic in conjunction with CISM Championships 1st-5th November 2006 in southern Brazil. Several of the MC members are willing to assist as instructors. The IOF Secretary General would investigate the possibility of holding another clinic in South America to follow on.

3 LZ had received a request from Chinese Taipei to hold a mapping clinic. LZ has established contact with them. The Clinic is planned in the forthcoming years.

MC/06/15 Correspondence

1 MTBO
It was noted that the MTBO Championships in Finland had used the ISMTB-OM 2004 specifications.
The MC agreed that they should wait for the MTBO Commission to produce any competition rules and then would advise on the production of the map specification.

2 Special symbols
MC discussed the uses for the special symbols in the ISOM2000 specifications. It was agreed that the specifications allowed a number of uses but that they shall be shown in the legend on the map. It seemed appropriate that the colour of the symbols would reflect its use, as described in ISOM2000.

3 WOC Final 2006 France
LZ had received a further request for a deviation of scale for this event. MC agreed that this would not be allowed.
LZ had received a copy of a message from the Foot O Commission to the organisers of the World Cup 2006 Final in France declining the request for deviation of the scale for the long distance race.

4 LZ had received a request from the Portuguese Federation on the mapping of major overhead power cables. LZ had suggested that they should be shown.

MC/06/16. Map Commission 2006-2008

1 LZ had indicated that he wished to stand down as Chairman.
The IOF Council had asked HT to be the next Chairman. He had agreed.

2 The present members of the Commission were asked to indicate if they wished to continue on the Commission. They should request support from their Federations.

3 Map Commission web site. LZ was asked to continue to organise the site.

4 ISOM 2010? It was agreed that there was no real need for a major overhaul of ISOM 2000 but there might be some items such as printing where some changes in line with modern printing technology might be appropriate and some basic principles of cartography . Federations would be asked to contribute.

5 ICOM 12, 2007 This would be held in conjunction with WOC 2007 in the Ukraine.

LZ would organise the Conference. HT would organise the presentations. HT would write to all Federations to seek suggestions and offers for presentations

MC/06/17 Next meeting

The members of the first MC: Jan Martin Larsen NOR (chairman), Osmo Niemelä FIN, Christer Palm SWE, Torkil Laursen DEN, Ernst Spiess SUI
