A: The fieldworker is standing at the path junction (red circle - known position) and sights an object (green circle - unknown position), this unknown position can be fixed by measuring its bearing and distance from the path junction.
B: The fieldworker is standing at the path junction (red circle - unknown position, known path direction). Sighting on a known object (black circle) the fieldworker can project the bearing from the known object to intersect the path (green circle), this intersection fixes the position of the junction.
C: The fieldworker can see an object (green circle - unknown position) from 2 known path junctions (red circles). Measuring the bearing from each junction, when projected they will create an intersection fixing the position of the unknown object. This method requires no pacing.
D: The fieldworker standing at an unknown point (red circle) can view 2 path junctions. Measuring the bearings to the 2 junctions when plotted will produce an intersection that fixes the position of the unknown point.
