d = Distance from Satellite (ignoring atmospheric effects)
c = Velocity of Electro-Magnetic Wave (~ 300 000 km/s)
t = Time for Signal to travel from Satellite to Receiver

The basic principle behind GPS is that electromagnetic waves travel at a constant velocity (in a vacuum) and if you know how long it took for a signal to reach you you know how far you are away from the GPS transmitter.
