Provided the ground is flat and the plane flies horizontally at the moment of exposure no vertical distortion occurs. This ideal situation does not exist and the use of individual photographs requires great care.

The scale is continually varying across the photograph and is affected by both horizontal distortion and vertical distortion (camera tilt and hilliness).
