The Cartomium graphically illustrates the various disciplines and skills that may be involved in the design and production of maps. Taking the five core skills it can be seen that: symbol design is defined within the International Specification for Orienteering Maps which is supervised by the IOF map Commission, map content and generalization are at the discretion of the surveyor but who should be closely following ISOM, the cartographer who may need to follow national or club guidelines is responsible for map layout and map production planning could be the responsibility of the event director, club map co-ordinator or mapper.
