Tárgy: Cost project on Historical Wall Maps
Distinguished colleague,
We are Arturo Gallia, Associate Professor in Historical Geography at Roma Tre University, Rome, Italy, and Mirko Castaldi, PhD in Geography at Roma Tre University, Rome, Italy; we are working on a COST action proposal (https://www.cost.eu/) about Historical wall maps and we would invite you to partecipate or ask if you know someone interested to partecipate.
The project will be called UNROLL Unrolling the Past: Historical Wall Maps as European Cultural, Political and Educational Heritage
UNROLL will establish the first pan-European, interdisciplinary network dedicated to the historical study and public valorisation of school wall maps (19th–20th century) — the large-format maps once hung in classrooms and public offices that shaped how generations of Europeans imagined nations, borders and the wider world.
The network brings together historians, geographers, conservation scientists, digital-humanities specialists and educators around four Working Groups: conservation of these fragile artefacts (WG1); digitisation, metadata and Web-GIS (WG2); transnational comparative research on their political and pedagogical role (WG3); and educational and public outreach (WG4). Crucially, COST funds networking — meetings, training schools, mobility grants and dissemination — not research or digitisation costs, so participation carries no financial burden for your institution.
What we are asking of you. We invite you to join as a Secondary Proposer, contributing your expertise to the Working Group(s) most relevant to your work. As part of this, we would warmly ask you to involve your PhD students and post-doctoral researchers as Young Researchers and Innovators, and — where relevant — to help us connect with colleagues and institutions across Europe, particularly in Inclusiveness Target Countries.
What you gain by joining:
*
Access to a European network and to funded mobility (Short-Term Scientific Missions, Virtual Mobility) and Training Schools for your team.
*
Reimbursement of travel and accommodation for network meetings, and support for Open Access publications and dissemination.
*
Visibility for your collections and research, and a route to shared European standards for conservation, metadata and valorisation.
*
A springboard for your Young Researchers to build skills, leadership and international networks.
*
A basis to pursue future structural funding (e.g. Horizon Europe, ERDF) for primary digitisation of your holdings.
Next steps. If you are interested, please (1) confirm your interest by reply, and (2) create or update your profile on the e-COST platform (https://e-services.cost.eu) — this is required for us to send you the formal invitation. To keep to the submission timeline, we would be grateful for your confirmation.
I would be glad to answer any questions or to arrange a short call. Thank you for considering this invitation — we would be honoured to have you and your team in the network.
Thank you so much
Arturo Gallia
Mirko Castaldi
