ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF REMOTE SENSING AND GEOSPATIAL ANALYSIS
The Departments of Geography and Statistics in partnership with the Institute
for CyberScience (ICS) at The Pennsylvania State University, located in
University Park, PA, invite applications for a new faculty member in Remote
Sensing and Geospatial Analysis at the Assistant Professor level. This tenure
track faculty position is part of the cluster hire initiative of the Institute
for CyberScience (ICS) to enhance big-data and big-simulation in support of
the ‘Driving Digital Innovation’ thematic area of the Penn State strategic
plan. ICS is a University-wide, interdisciplinary research institute with more
than 20 ICS tenure-track co-hired faculty and nearly 300 associates in
interdisciplinary research enabled by high performance computing (HPC). Penn
State’s high-performance research cloud, the ICS Advanced Cyber Infrastructure
(ICS-ACI), is available to all faculty engaged in HPC-enabled research.

We seek a colleague who specializes in statistical, computational, or
geoinformatics methods and conducts research using remotely sensed data to
better understand the dynamics within or between ecosystems, the atmosphere,
and the critical zone. Potential research areas may include detecting,
analyzing, modeling, and predicting environmental change using data from
satellites, airborne sources, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). We seek
someone who is working across scales, such as local, regional, and global
scales, and who has experience working with large ecological or geospatial
data sets to inform our understanding of environmental patterns or process
drivers, with emphasis in big-data or big-simulation research using HPC.

Applicants are expected to have completed all requirements of a PhD degree
before August 1, 2019. This position requires excellence in teaching,
research, and service while the professor is employed by Penn State, as well
as the development of an externally funded research program. We expect that
the candidate will contribute to the research and teaching of both the
Departments of Geography and Statistics and will support the strategic
objectives of the ICS. The tenure home of the new faculty member will be in
either the Geography department or Statistics department, depending on the
candidate`s background and interests.

Application materials should be completed at https://psu.jobs/job/83744.
Applicants will upload application materials consisting of 1) cover letter
identifying the fit with both the Departments of Geography and Statistics, as
well as ICS; 2) curriculum vitae; 3) statement of research; 4) statement of
teaching interests; 5) statement of their commitment to fostering diversity,
equity, inclusive excellence, and belonging and of engagement which creates an
inclusive environment in their department/workplace; and 6) names and contact
information for four references. Appointments could begin as early as July 1,
2019. Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2018 and continue
until the position is filled. Further inquiries about the position may be
directed to Dr. Guido Cervone (cervone at psu.edu<mailto:cervone at psu.edu>).
