[Ica-sdistandards] Mapping the Sustainability Development goals - ICA’s best practice (book proposal)

Dear Serena,

As you may know, I am deeply involved in the topic of geographic information for the SDG as I am the technical coordinator of UN-GGIM: Europe WG on core data, core data being defined as the data the most useful to analyse, achieve or monitor the SDGs.

The general purpose “Mapping the SDG “ should probably be clarified. As Sustainable Development is a wide area, almost all kinds of maps may be considered as supporting the SDG. May be, the topic is restricted to “monitoring the SDG” and displaying SDG indicators?

The term “map” should also probably be better defined. Is it only just about 2D maps or are 3D visual representations also included? I am thinking about this example as I remember that IGN France and some partner (swisstopo?) had elaborated a guide about ethics of 3D data => general principle was that the 3D representation should be neutral and reflect the real world and should not try to orient the decision-making.

Regarding our Commission of Standards and SDI, other potential examples:

- have data everywhere (this is purpose of the core data initiative)

o good example: a map with data in each country

o bad example: a map with missing data in some countries

- have harmonized, standardised data

o good example: a map with harmonized data in each country

o bad example: a map with heterogeneous data (in Europe, we don’t have harmonized classification of roads => many discrepancies at international borders)

- have standardized portrayal rules

o good example : the ELF Basemap

- have “good” portrayal rules: likely, most of these SDG related maps will be maps displaying some statistical data. There are probably lots of rules to be respected in order to provide the right overview of a phenomena, e.g. regarding the “order” component of cartography (how to choose intervals of values, which statistical units to be used, …). A potential good example is the use of grids to display statistic information rather than administrative units. Likely, we should consult the statistical community.

Hoping this mail will help you.

Best regards

Dominique

Dear Commission Members,

the ICA President has asked us for input/feedback on a book proposal on mapping the United Nations SDGs, see email below. If you have any comments/feedback, let us know.

Tomorrow, the Commission members who are here in Stockholm for the ISO/TC 211 meetings will meet to discuss the proposal.

Franz-Josef and I will reply to the email below on Thursday (1 June). However, you are welcome to send further comments/feedback after that, which we will take to the meeting about the book, to be held in Washington DC.

Regards,

Dear all,
As you have been able to read in my recent blog ( http://icaci.org/presidents-blog-revised-ica-posters-on-maps-and-sustainable-development-goals/) we have updated the posters. Now it is time for the next step. For this step, I do ask a contribution from ALL commissions.
As you might remember the idea is to ‘convert’ the posters into a book “Mapping the Sustainability Development goals - ICA’s best practice”. The objective is to offer practical cartographic knowledge to those who want to map the SDGs. This based on the experiences of our Commissions and Working Groups. The book will provide a brief overview / guideline on how to design maps based on SDG-data with many examples of do’s and don’ts.
We will discuss the plan in detail in our meeting during the ICC2017 in Washington (July 7, after the closing ceremony from 16:00-18:00). To efficiently run that short meeting a good preparation is key. Therefore, I do have some homework for you to do.
The objective of the meeting is to agree on the book content, and consequently split the labor among the commissions.
Attached the book proposal I did send to ESRI. This proposal also contains a suggested table of content. Your contribution is expected for section 5: the map examples.
For each Commission and Working Group I do expect at least one page. A page would contain, similar to the poster, seen through the eyes of your Commission or Working Group, a bad versus a good example, explained by some text. To get some consistency in all examples I attached a small template to fill with three questions.

· First I would like you to position your Commission or Working Group relative to the definition of our discipline.

· Second I would like you to indicate what kind of example you would like to create. Here I would like you to consider the base map, the theme, and the mapping environment.

· Third describe the map examples you have in mind.
Please return the answers before June 1.
MJ
