Ocean and sea-bottom topography have intensivelyˇbeen carried out for the
recent years and this work is going on increasingly. Further to opening up oil
and gas localities on the shelfs, surveying of deep sea, of the ocean
territories becomes also important on account of prospective oreˇsites and for
military reasons, as well.
We have still not become fully acquainted with this territory and thus
every indirect, non bathymetricˇmethod that helps us become more acquainted
withˇthe suboceanic surface is of great importance.
After reviewing the problems, the traditional and up-to-date methods of
ocean mapping, the author speaks about cartographic extrapolation i. e. about
using the results of plate tectonics in compiling small scale maps. In this
connection the most important theses of plate tectonics are also reviewed.
