1. Welcome
The host, Mr. Klinghammer, welcomes the present members of the project Multimedial History of Hungary and Finland on CD-ROM". In his role as current rector of the ELTE Budapest he also emphasizes, the particular readiness of his institute and the university as a whole regarding the projects cooperation. Mr. Fischer expresses his gratitude about the hospitality and the preparatory measures, that lead to the expectation of a successful meeting.
2. Explanation of the note from 20th april 2001
After the first meeting from the 6th/7th april 2001, Mr. Fischer had a intensive conversation about budgetoriented citems with the official in charge at the University of Hamburg. A note about this conversation had been sent to all of the projects participants. The individual topics were specified once more in detail.
3. Principal decision about the system of the multimedial design
Mr. Pápay refered about several conversations, he had had in the meantime with experts at the University of Rostock and at the Rostock branch-office of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Graphic Data Processing, and shortly presented the systems, that can be utilized for the multimedial design of the CD-ROM. After a very comprehensive discussion about the respective strenghts and weaknesses of the various systems (Director, XML, html, PowerPoint), as well as the demands, resulting from the tight schedule, it is determined, that the html-system is to be used (Decision 2/1).
4. Structural composition
As material for the discussion about the structural composition of the CD-ROM, the following papers were taken as basis:
- Graphical proposal of structure by Mr. Pápay
- Proposal of structure for chapter 8: Kádár - Kekkonen, 1945-1989 by Mr. Fischer
- Conceptual chart for the period 1945-1956 by Mr. Halmesvirta
All three notes were thoroughly explained and discussed. During this process, it became evident that the proposals of Mr. Pápay and Mr. Fischer were quite similar in their structural organisation, while Mr. Halmesvirtas paper is understood more in naming decisive aspects about the comparative introduction of finish and hungarian history during the concerning period.
The principal decision about the history of Finland and Hungary on 2 CD-ROMs, that were layed down at the meeting in Hamburg, is modified as follows:
Decision 2/2: The complete history of Finland and Hungary will be presented in german on one CD, in english on the other.
During the discussion the following decisions were made:
Decision 2/3: The proposals of structural composition made by Mr. Pápay and Mr. Fischer are accepted. Meanwhile, a revised graphical representation of the structural organisation on basis of the discussion, which shows an overview about the important elements on each page (cover of the CD-ROM, cover of each period, cover of each periods chapter), will be sent extra.
Decision 2/4: The cover of the CD-ROM is to include the following elements:
- Impressum
- Table of contents
- Introductionary text into the problems
- Site plan Hungary/Finland
- Statistical basic dates about Hungary and Finland
- Reliefmap: Hungary in the Carpathian bassin
- Reliefmap: Finland in Scandinavia
- Map: Administrative organisation of Hungary
- Map: Administrative organisation of Finland
Decision 2/5: The cover of each period is to include the following elements:
- Introductionary text about the comparative presentation of finish and hungarian history of the period
- Table of contents
- Common chronology about the period
- Basic map Hungary during the period
- Basic map Finland during the period
Decision 2/6: The chronology of a period includes a common timeline, that permits a direct synopsis of finish and hungarian history. (Graphical sketch by Mr. Fischer)
Decision 2/7: Each period is divided into numerous chapters. From this level on, the presentation will comprise Hungary and Finland seperately. The cover of each chapter includes the following elements:
- Table of contents
- Short introduction into the hungarian resp. finish history.
Decision 2/8: Each chapter of a period will further divided into sub-chapters. On this level, the page will contain the following elements:
- Textpage
- Presentationpage (Illustrationpage) with multimedial elements: maps, photos, movie-sequences, audiomaterials
Decision 2/9: The CD-ROM recieves an alphabeticly arranged encyclopedia on the level of the main cover. The encyclopedia is to include the following elements:
- Names of persons, along with short biographical summaries
- Selected places with short chronological summaries
- Register of places in various languages (hungarian, german, current name)
- Selected historical events and terms with a short explanation, if not already given in the text.
- Parties
- Abbreviations
Decision 2/10: The encyclopedia about the hungarion section will be finished by student assistants in Rostock under direction of Mr. Pápay. He will be assisted by Mr. Fischer in Hamburg. The finish section will be written in Jyväskylä.
5. Design of basic maps
After a brief discussion about the pros and contras on maps as gif-files or jpg-files and after a fundamental understanding about the uniformity in the basic design of maps, it is decided to utilize the following maps (decision 2/11):
- Main Cover of the CD-ROM:
- Site plan of Finland and Hungary (globe section or EU-Map)(Handling by Térképtud. Tsz. Budapest)
- Reliefmap: Hungary in the Carpathian bassin (Handling by Térképtud. Tsz. Budapest)
- Reliefmap: Finland in Scandinavia (Handling by Térképtud. Tsz. Budapest)
- Administrative organisation of Hungary (Handling by Térképtud. Tsz. Budapest)
- Administrative organisation of Finland (Handling by Térképtud. Tsz. Budapest based on a model map from Jyväskylä)
- Cover to each period:
- Basic map of Hungary during that period (Handling by Térképtud. Tsz. Budapest)
- Basic map of Finland during that period (Handling by Jyväskylä - If the capacities in Jyväskylä are not sufficient, the basics of these maps can be sent to Téképtud. Tsz. Budapest for further handling)
In context of mapdesign, further details are disussed and determined:
- For a easier survey, the named maps should not be divided but be scrollable if neccessary at all.
- The maps used in particular chapters or subchapters should include simply informations, as to be easier recognisable by content. In singular cases it has to be discussed, wether the maps are divided or scrollable.
- Dynamic maps are to be designed, as to consist out of a series of static maps and a timeline
- The names of places are to be presented in the corresponding official names of the period. Only the names of countries and waters, as well as legends are to be translated. The first version of the maps is to be in german language, which then is translated into English.
- Sensitive maps dont seem neccessary. Instead, there should be a reference to the encyclopedia at the menu-bar, with direct access to it.
6. Graphic design
Mr. Pápay refers that he led detailed conversations about the graphic design at the branch-office Rostock of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Graphic Data Processing. The institute offers to design the crucial elements of the CD-ROM (Cover, buttons, covers of periods and chapters, chronology, color design, etc.) for a fee of 6 - 8.000 DM. Mr. Kuukka notices that there also exists the possibility of Design in Jyväskylä. (A first suggestion is presented in the Internet, at:
www.multimedia.jyu.fi/fihu/modell.html) After consulting the colleague in question, Timo Sirviö, Mr. Kuukka reports that Mr. Sirviö would take on the design for a fee of 4 - 6.000 FIM. It is decided that the Fraunhofer-Institute as well as the finish colleague are charged to develop a graphic design. (Decision 2/13). Both will get the same materials. The outline should be ready until end of May, as there will be enough time left to enter the corresponding dates for the prototype chapter. The final decision about the graphic design will be made at the meeting in Jyväskylä.
7. Tasks and dates
The following distribution of tasks and corresponding dates are fixed during the discussion (Decision 2/14):
- Each author is to develop a scriptlike outline of his part (period, chapter, subchapter). Date: Meeting in Jyväskylä, 15.-17.06.2001
- Each author is responsible for suggestions and wishes regarding multimedial elements (maps, photos, illustraions, graphics, filmclips, audiomaterials, etc.) of his part. Date for the nomination of these suggestions and outlines: Meeting in Jyväskylä, 15.-17.06.2001. Further suggestions about the multimedial elements can be made continously.
- The authors are to develop suggestions about basic and thematic maps. Date: Meeting in Jyväskylä, 15.-17.06.2001
- Mr. Fischer, Mr. Halmesvirta and Mr. Pápay will write a chapter (history of Hungary 1945-1956, as well as an introductionary comparative text, and, if possible, also a history of Finland 1945-1956) for the purpose of a prototype and present the text in Jyväskylä. Date: Meeting in Jyväskylä, 15.-17.06.2001
- The orders to both designers (Fraunhofer-Institute Rostock, University of Jyväskylä) will be arranged by Mr. Pápay and Mr. Kuukka. The arrangement will be signed by the University of Hamburg. Date for delivering both outlines: End of May.
8. Requirements
An exact estimation about the requirement of scientific work contracts, student assistants, etc. is not possible at this time. Hence, only requirements until the Meeting in Jyväskylä, 15.-17.06.2001 are named and fixed (Decision 2/15):
- University of Rostock:
- Buys a hard disc From their own founds and places it at the projects disposal
- 1 student assistant with work contract for the whole term, total requirement ca. 6.000
- 1 student assistant for the html-translation, ca. 19 hours/week, requirement ca. 600 /month
- 1 student assistant for the digital videoarrangement, development of the encyclopedia, audioarrangement, ca. 19 hours/week, requirement ca. 600 /week
- 1 IT-Expert for IT-related tasks for the whole term, total requirement ca. 500

- University of Paris:
- Requirements not yet known.
- Further requirements are not determinable yet, but are already taken into account at the application for the project. This includes:
- Expenses for the translations
- Expenses for the assessment
9. Various points of interest
During discussion, a number of further problems was discussed shortly. The results and decisions of these are as follows:
- Regarding illustrations, if possible, originals are to be used and scanned into the computer. The purchase in Hungary will be undertaken by a student assistant from Térképtud. Tsz. The purchase in Finland is not yet known. So far, there are no informations regarding the amount of copyright fees.
- Illustrations are to be provided with record of origin.
- The amount of expenses about the use of short filmclips (films, documentaries, neewsreel) is also not known at this time. It is common sense that the sound will be in the original language, that will have a written translation added.
- In the encyclopedia, hungarian and finish names will get a short sound document added, that shows the correct pronounciation.
- Regarding the translation of the textparts, the following rules about the locations are agreed upon, where the translations are to be made:
- FIN * GER: in Hamburg
- FIN * GB: in Jyväskylä
- HUN * GER: in Hamburg, partly in Budapest
- HUN * GB: in Budapest, partly in Hamburg
- The amount of expenses for the assessment in regard to the evaluation of concept and content are taken into account by the application for the project and are listed under personal expenses. It is consent that the examination of the multimedial concept should be made immediately after the completion of the prototype, if possible. Mrs Prof. Schumann (Rostock) is scheduled as examiner. The examination of the parts that include the hungarian and finish history will evidently have to wait until later.
- It is still not clear, who will be named for the Copyright of the complete CD-ROM: singular persons? All members of the project? The participating universities? Mr. Klinghammer agrees to ask lawyers from the Eötvös Loránd University about this problem.
