Generic classification

One has to know what topographic features need names on the map!

• Define feature categories suitable to the landscape

  • streams vs. canals

  • swamps vs. marshes

• Avoid feature distinctions based on size (because it will be difficult in the field to assess the relative size):

  • creeks vs. rivers

  • hills vs. mountains
