Open from 1 December 2005: Wien 1, Herrengasse 9, Palais Mollard, Mon - Wed, Fri - Sat 10.00 - 14.00, Thurs 15.00 - 19.00

The new exhibition of the unique museum presents 240 different globes and globe-related instruments. There are displays explaining the different types and functions of the terrestrial and celestial globes, and the traditional methods of globe making is also demonstrated, with the examples of the large Coronelli globes.
Beyond the fascinating  history of globes, starting with the unique copy of Gemma Frisius' 1538 terrestrial globe, its engraver's own globe is represented as a virtual globe, created by Andreas Riedl. Visitors can turn, magnify and compare the 1540 globe of Mercator with the modern globe on the touch screen, which is placed behind the case protecting original Mercator globe pair (1541-1551). The last room, the chamber of the globe collectors' present the finest pieces of famous Austrian private collections (Wohlschlager,Schmidt, Allmayer-Beck).

I am grateful to Prof. Ingrid Kretschmer, who invited me for the special occasion offered by the Austrian National Library to visit of the museum before its opening. Many thanks to curator Jan Mokre, who allowed me to take some photos (without flash, of course).
